Resize Image How-To Guide

Welcome! This guide will walk you through using Resize Image's powerful image optimization tools. Let's make your images shine and your websites faster!

How to Compress & Resize a Single Image

Our main tool helps you quickly reduce the file size of an individual image and optionally change its dimensions. Perfect for optimizing images before uploading them to your website or sharing them.

  1. Step 1: Upload Your Image

Navigate to the Compress & Resize tool. You can either drag and drop your image file (JPG, PNG, or WebP) directly onto the designated area, or click the area to open your file browser and select an image.

    Drag and drop area
  2. Step 2: Adjust Compression Quality

Once uploaded, you'll see a preview of your original image. Use the "Compression Quality" slider to set your desired level. A lower percentage means higher compression (smaller file size) but might reduce quality. A higher percentage preserves more quality but results in a larger file. The default (75%) is usually a good balance.

  3. Step 3: (Optional) Resize Dimensions

If you need to change the image's width or height, enter the new values in the "Resize (Optional)" input fields (W for Width, H for Height in pixels). By default, "Maintain aspect ratio" is checked to prevent your image from looking stretched or squashed. Uncheck it if you need specific, non-proportional dimensions.

  4. Step 4: Select Output Format

Choose your desired output format from the "Output Format" dropdown (JPEG, PNG, or WebP). If you're unsure, JPEG is good for photos, PNG for graphics with transparency, and WebP for modern web use offering great quality at small sizes.

  5. Step 5: (Optional) Rename File

You can give your optimized image a new name in the "File Name" input field. If left blank, a default name like "optimized_image" will be used.

  6. Step 6: Optimize and Download

Click the "Optimize Image" button. Resize Image will process your image in your browser. You'll then see a preview of the compressed image, its new size, and the percentage reduction. Click the "Download Image" button to save it to your device.

  7. Step 7: (Optional) Clear All

If you want to start over with a new image, click the "Clear All" button. This will reset the tool.

How to Use the Bulk Image Compressor

The Bulk Image Compressor is perfect when you have multiple images to optimize. It allows you to apply the same settings to a batch of images and download them all at once in a ZIP file.

  1. Step 1: Upload Multiple Images

Go to the Bulk Compressor tool. Drag and drop multiple image files (JPG, PNG, WebP) into the upload area, or click to select them from your computer. You'll see them appear in the "Image Queue."

  2. Step 2: Set Global Optimization Settings

Adjust the "Compression Quality" slider and select the "Output Format" for all images in the batch. You can also set "Max Width" or "Max Height" if you want to resize all images to fit within certain dimensions while maintaining aspect ratio. Choosing "Keep Original Format" in the output format dropdown will compress each image but save it in its source format.

  3. Step 3: Manage Your Queue (Optional)

You can click "Add More Files" to add more images to the queue. If you added an image by mistake, you can remove individual images from the queue using the icon next to each image (this functionality would be in your JS).

  4. Step 4: Compress All Images

Click the "Compress All" button. Resize Image will process each image in the queue. You'll see an overall progress bar and individual status updates for each image.

  5. Step 5: Download All as ZIP

Once all images are processed, the "Download All as ZIP" button will become active. Click it to download a single ZIP file containing all your optimized images. A summary of the total savings will also be displayed.

  6. Step 6: Clear Queue

To start a new batch, click the "Clear Queue" button. This will remove all images and reset the tool.

How to Use the Image Converter

Need to change an image from one format to another (e.g., JPG to PNG, or PNG to WebP)? The Image Converter tool makes it easy.

  1. Step 1: Upload Your Image

Visit the Image Converter tool. Drag and drop your image file or click to select it. The converter accepts a wide range of input formats.

  2. Step 2: Select Target Format

In the "Convert To" section, choose your desired "Target Format" from the dropdown list (e.g., JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP).

  3. Step 3: Adjust Quality (If Applicable)

If you select JPEG or WebP as the target format, a "Quality" slider will appear. Adjust it to balance quality and file size for the converted image. This option is not available for formats like PNG (which is lossless) or GIF/BMP (where canvas conversion typically doesn't offer fine-grained quality control).

  4. Step 4: (Optional) Set Output File Name

You can specify a name for your converted image in the "Output File Name" field.

  5. Step 5: Convert and Download

Click the "Convert Image" button. Resize Image will convert the image in your browser. You'll see a preview of the converted image and its new format/size. Click "Download Converted Image" to save it.

  6. Step 6: Start New Conversion

Click "Start New Conversion" to reset the tool and convert another image.

General Image Optimization Tips

  • Choose the Right Format:

JPEG: Best for photographs and images with many colors/gradients. Offers good compression but is "lossy" (some data is discarded).

PNG: Ideal for graphics, logos, icons, and images requiring transparency. "Lossless" (no quality loss), but files can be larger than JPEGs for photos.

WebP: A modern format offering excellent lossy and lossless compression, often smaller than JPEG and PNG with comparable quality. Supports transparency and animation. Great for web use, but check browser compatibility if supporting older browsers.

GIF: Use for simple animations. For static images, PNG or WebP are usually better.

  • Balance Quality and File Size:

Experiment with the quality settings. Often, you can significantly reduce file size with minimal visible quality loss. For web, aim for the smallest file size that still looks good on various screen sizes.

  • Resize Before Compressing:

If you know the final dimensions an image needs to be (e.g., for a blog post thumbnail), resize it to those dimensions first. Compressing a very large image and then shrinking it in HTML/CSS is inefficient.

  • Consider Your Audience:

If your website visitors are primarily on mobile or have slow internet, aggressive optimization is crucial. For high-resolution portfolio sites, you might prioritize quality slightly more.

  • Test on Different Devices:

What looks good on your large desktop monitor might look different on a small mobile screen. Preview your optimized images on various devices if possible.

  • Use Resize Image's Tools!

Our tools are designed to make these processes easy and efficient, all within your browser for maximum privacy.
